Another Pineapple Present

Here's a gift I received from my oldest son and his girlfriend. It's a Beautiful Pitcher Etched With a Pineapple! I just love it when I get gifts that remind of my writing and Hawaii.

What are your favorite gifts and why? Do they remind you of something special in your life?

Selfie??

Have you ever taken a photo of yourself (A Selfie)??

My hubby and his sister are always mistaken for being Hawaiian. They aren't, but their half-Burmese heritage gives them that look--the broad shoulders and build, along with dark hair and skin.

A few weeks ago my sister-in-law posted this "selfie" on her Facebook page.

Cute, huh?? She figured since everyone thinks she's Hawaiian, this would be the perfect "selfie."

For me, I especially love the purple grass skirt and that she's playing the ukulele! Ahhh . . . yes . . . reminds me of writing my book, Ukuleles Undercover. And--someday I want to learn to play the uke! How about you? Do you play the uke or hope to play someday?

NEVER in Hawaii!, and THURSDAYS ONLY for now!

Not once, but TWICE this winter, my husband and I have been caught at the Oregon coast when snow has hit!

WOW!! It almost never snows at the beach in the Pacific Northwest, and since we don't live there, what were the chances that we'd get caught there not just once, but twice this winter??

The first time was in December when we woke up to 4 inches of snow. It was gorgeous and amazing--something you'd never see in the coastal regions of the Hawaiian Islands. Now you would see snow on Mauna Kea on the island of Maui, but never at the coast. It's a beautiful, strange thing to see snow, sand and ocean waves in the same setting.

The second time was just past week when the Portland, Oregon area was hit early with a major storm. We were planning on getting home the day before it was supposed to hit, but it came early and we ended up stranded, yet enjoying another snowfall at the coast!

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you're aware that I blog twice per week. That will be changing! I will now be Blogging on Thursdays Only! I look forward to all of you visiting every Thursday, and hope You'll Leave A Comment or Mark a Box Each Week!

Soft Top Before Shortboard??

This is part two of my blog about my main character, Leilani Akamai, and her surfboard. She is thirteen years old and has been surfing since she was about eight. She loves surfing and it pretty good at it. She’s currently using a minilongboard. But what kind of board does she want to get?

She wants to improve her surfing maneuvers, which means she should move toward a shortboard. But, by Leilani’s own admission, she tends to crash and burn a lot when trying new things.

The solution?
soft top board.

This will allow her to try new moves without the worry of dinging her board or whacking her head too hard. She also won’t have to worry as much about damaging someone else’s board, and the price will be less for the soft top than a regular board.

The biggest drawback with these boards is their weight. They are heavier than the traditional boards.

For more information on the pros and cons of soft top boards, check out this site:

Malibu??

Leilani Akamai, is thirteen years old and has been surfing since she was about eight. She loves surfing and it pretty good at it. But what kind of board does she use? Regardless of brand, colors, and fins, there are several types of boards to choose from.

The best board for a beginner is a longboard (or Malibu) to give the surfer control. Although I don’t know for sure since I was using someone else’s board, I imagine I surfed with a longboard when I lived in Hawaii. If you’ve read my last post, you know that adventure turned out much better than my video game surfing has.

Leilani’s board is 7’ to 8’ minilongboard. She does well with that board, but may someday want to shift to a shortboard (or thruster.) This will allow her to perform more quick maneuvers, but she’ll be giving up some of the control her longboard offers.

Another more mid-sized board is the funboard (or eggbecause of the shape.) This is a board Leilani could consider before shifting to a shortboard.

Check back on Thursday for information on the cool board Leilani wants to buy.
