I is for Investigation

Simon Howden / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

There’s a ton of Investigation in The Hawaiian Island Detective Club series. The kids spy on people, follow them and even plan stakeouts. And those stakeouts are never in nice, comfy places. Sometimes while investigating, they also confront their suspects—fun times!

As well as Investigating, the kids encounter a nice dose of Intrigue and muster up plenty of confidence for all of their Interrogations.

I can’t wait for all of you to read Pineapples in Peril and see exactly what situations Leilani, Maile, Sam and even Kimo get themselves into! And then, as you continue the series, I know you’ll be surprised at the new predicaments they fall into.

Enjoy, and don’t forget to join me every Monday and Thursday as I go through the alphabet, giving you little snippets of words from Pineapples in Peril (Book 1 of The Hawaiian Island Detective Club.) It’s the ABCs OF THE HIDC!—until the release date for Pineapples on October 2, 2012.

G is for Gorgeous

Oahu

Oahu

Everything in the small town where Leilani and her friends live is GORGEOUS! The skies, pineapple fields, sugar can fields, and beaches. There are hundreds of types of beautiful flowers and plants, palm trees and fruit trees. And then there’s Leilani’s favorite, surfing! She lives close to great surfing beaches and tries to surf as much as possible—even when it means getting up at O-Dark-Thirty in the morning to do it!

F is for Flip-Flops

Ahh . . . my favorite! I just love wearing FLIP-FLOPS in the nice, warm summer weather. In Hawaii, they are called slippers, so both words are used in my book (just to add a little confusion!)

So, slip your toes in and take a walk through the sand, but when you get home, be sure to leave your FLIP-FLOPS by the front door!

E is for Evidence

Simon Howden / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

How do the kids solve the case? The physical EVIDENCE is all squished in the fields. The kids have to resort to interrogations, spying and stakeouts to catch the guilty parties. They also have to learn that sometimes the EVIDENCE doesn’t always lead them to the answers they hope to hear.

And here’s another E—the EFFECTS of the damage has a huge financial impact on the plantation as it actually takes 18 months for a pineapple to reach maturity. The kids have an important job!

D is for Detective

winnond / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

The kids learn quickly about all the pitfalls of being a real DETECTIVE. But they are DETERMINED to track down the culprits.

Leilani is DEVOTED to her DAD’S memory and thinks of him often. We know very little about Mr. Akamai, but learn more as the series continues in Menehunes Missing and Ukuleles Undercover.

C is for Criminal

chanpipat / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Leilani, Maile and Sam investigate and spy to try to unmask a CRIMINAL.

The three 13-year-olds have moved beyond their “pretend” detective days as The Hawaiian Island Detective Club, and now want to prove their skills as real investigators. Someone’s been vandalizing the pineapple fields and Leilani convinces her friends that they can figure out who’s doing it and why. And then the fun begins!

C is also for CARLY—the kids’ neighbor and dreaded enemy. Ever have one of those as a kid? Well, you can imagine what could happen!

And the final C is for COCONUT COOKIES—a favorite of Sam (who actually loves anything edible!)

B is for Beach!

Ahhh, yes! BEACHES in Hawaii are amazing. And then there are the BLACK SAND BEACHES on the Big Island. Leilani spends a lot of time at the beach because of her love of surfing. She knows you always need a surfing BUDDY when you’re out there in those unpredictable waves.

B is also for BENNETT, Leilani’s friend Sam’s last name. And just to round out our Bs for today, let me introduce you to Sam’s amazing talent—BURPING OR BELCHING! Yes, Leilani thinks it’s pretty gross too!

Enjoy a couple of my beach photos from when I was last in the islands.

A is for Aloha!

busja / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

ALOHA is such a great word. It means three different things, according to when and how one uses it. Aloha means Hello, Goodbye and Love.

When you read Pineapples in Peril, you will definitely feel the spirit of aloha as you get to know the young teen detectives, their families and their friends.

A is also for AKAMAI which is the last name of the main character, Leilani. Kids will certainly enjoy getting to know Leilani Akamai, as well as her brother, Kimo. Like any siblings, they have their moments of aloha as well as those moments when they’d like to strangle each other.
