Riding up to the Arizona Memorial |
Pearl Harbor Day is
coming up on December 7, 2011. This year it’s the 70th anniversary
of the day in 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, which marked the
United States’ entry into WWII.
I never visited Pearl Harbor when I lived in Hawaii, but when we went
to the islands in 2007, my family toured the museum, watched the video, and
rode out to the Arizona memorial.
Part of the Sunken Arizona |
It was an amazing experience, well worth the time to visit. But what
surprised me the most was how much my kids enjoyed the experience. They were
really into all the history.
I recommend you visit if you’re on the island of Oahu.
Mahalo for visiting!
Cheryl
I've never had a chance to visit either. Since I'm from Arizona, I feel a special connection to that sunken ship. It must be a somber place, one that helps us to remember our history and heritage and the sacrifice it has taken for our country to flourish as it has.
ReplyDeleteI've never visited either. But one day, I'd like to. My DH has been to Hawaii but not Pearl Harbor. He was just talking about it the other day, maybe that's a sign we should go!! lol
ReplyDeleteYes, Lindsay, I bet you do feel a connection to the Arizona! It's a wonderful place to visit and experience the history. I hope you get to go someday!
ReplyDeleteI think it is indeed a sign, Jessica! You do need to visit--and be sure to put Pearl Harbor on your list of "must sees!" If you look back at some of my past posts (you can do a search) check out my "picks" on Oahu--like the Dole Pineapple Plantation and North Shore--especially Aoki's Shave Ice! The plantation is very commercial, but we LOVED the sorbet with fresh pineapple--and they're large enough to share. 'Course I do have a special connection with pineapples since my first book is titled Pineapples in Peril! :-)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that this will be the final year for the original Pearl Harbor survivors. However, I understand that time is taking its toll. At least we can look forward to the children and grandchildren carrying on the legacy of these brave people.
ReplyDeleteYes, Brandi, what happened at Pearl Harbor is something that should--and will--always be remembered.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your continued support!
I would love to visit Hawaii and this location. I dont think that Pearl Harbor story would ever leave my mind, it will always be remembered. Thank you for stopping by my blog! I appreciate the feedback!
ReplyDeleteThanks, KC, for the visit and the comment! Hope you get to visit Hawaii someday soon--and especially Pearl Harbor.
ReplyDeleteMy best friend was born on the 7th and when people asked when her birthday was, she'd say on Pearl Harbor Day. Most people have NO idea when that is! (Okay, confession time, I didn't either until I met her.)
ReplyDeleteI've never visited it. I hope to, possibly next year. I remember my parents and grandparents telling stories about where they were when they heard that Pearl Harbor was bombed. They heard about it over the radio as President Roosevelt spoke on a Sunday morning...no TV...no twitter...no cell phone videos...no internet...no CNN.
ReplyDeleteMy history-buff husband would love, love, love to visit this memorial sometime. It may be my biggest hook to get him to Hawaii! :) Hey, I'll use whatever it takes.
ReplyDeleteFunny, Christina! My daughter's birthday in on 9/11--not hard to figure that date out, huh?
ReplyDeleteAmazing, isn't it, Loree, how much our technology has increased in really a very short time?
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting and commenting!
Great plan, Rhonda! My dad was waaaaaaay into military stuff. He loved everything about WWII especially. Your hubby would love the memorial.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sad, horrible day. I can't believe it's been 70 years...
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to believe it's been that long, Jessica. Also hard to believe it's already been 10 years since 9/11. Time just keeps marching forward.
