Ever watch The Travel Channel? They
have a show called Extreme Hawaii that
offers some amazing and interesting things about the islands. A couple weeks ago I
shared about Extreme Pineapples. Today it’s Extreme Surfing.
Leilani Akamai, my main character,
loves to surf. But she’s never attempted this kind of surfing!
On the Big Island of Hawaii, some
people take on the challenge of Mountain
Surfing (Hawaiian Sledding.) They use a 12-foot long, 6-inch wide board
that is custom made for the grassy mountainsides. It’s called a papaholua. The boards are rubbed with kukui oil and can reach over 40 miles
per hour! Just imagine—you actually stand up while sledding!
Although the art of making these
boards goes back hundreds of years, there’s only one man still crafting the
boards in the ancient tradition. His name is Tom “Pohaku” Stone. Click this link, scroll down to see pictures
and read more about this man and the ancient sport:

I couldn't figure out the information on Hawaii until I went to your about section. Wonderful about the book coming out and that you spent time there! We vacationed there once and I loved it!
ReplyDeleteAs you can tell, Terri, I LOVE it too! My last trip was in 2007 on a cruise. Can't wait to get back there again. Maybe after the series takes off???

Congratulations on your book coming out! Just popped over and caught that. How exciting! I'd say this merits a new pair of - flip-flops? :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rhonda! I do have some new flip-flops!! I haven't taken photos yet, but later this spring or summer you'll see them showing up in my blog. They are black with beads and glittery things--I just love a little "bling!"
