Callie Comes To Life!

My friend, Sharon Srock's book, Callie, has just released! It is part of The Women of Valley View series.

Sharon answered a few questions about writing and then she talked with Callie about Hawaii! I love to talk with characters--don't you?? It's so much fun to learn about their past experiences--things we never read about in their stories.

Enjoy a peek into Sharon's writing world and then find her book on-line or in your favorite book store!

Sharon Srock

What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve never really been able to answer that question, even for myself.  I felt the call to write years ago, but it never really went anywhere. Before I started this project, I hadn’t written anything in years. One day, almost 4 years ago, a new co-worker stopped by my desk to introduce herself. In the course of the conversation, she mentioned that she was a writer. I told her  that that had been my dream a long time ago. She just looked at e and said “you gave up too soon.”  That night I started Callie’s story.

What is the writing process like for you?

I have a full time job and a part time job. I write in the spaces in between. I’m a pantser. I don’t outline and I don’t have a daily or weekly writing goal. I know how the story begins and ends and I get to fill in the blanks. My only goal is a word count goal for the story. I edit a bit as I go, but mostly I just write.

What advice do you have for new writers?

To learn patience from the first word. The whole process is a waiting game, and not for the faint hearted.  Join a writers group and pray for a great critique partner.

Callie and Hawaii!!
Sharon talked with Callie about Hawaii and asked her to
answer the following questions:

Have you ever visited Hawaii?
I visited Hawaii for a week a few years ago. I took my grandson and we had a marvelous time. A week was just not long enough. It’s definitely on my visit again list.
Tell me a little about your favorite part.
Hanauma Bay
We did so many things while we were on the island. We parasailed, we saw an Elvis show, we went to a luau. But my favorite thing was the morning we snorkeled at Hanauma Bay. I couldn’t believe that this beach could be so crowded and the fish still be “right there”. It was amazing and has become my favorite vacation activity.
How would you like to spend your time during your next visit?
We rushed so much on that initial trip. I didn’t get nearly enough time on the beach. I’d love to go back and take a cruise that visits the other islands. The volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawaii fascinate me, and I think I’d also like to visit Maui. A week on the beach with a good book is my idea of heaven on earth.
Pearl Harbor
Anything else you’d like to share about your "Island Experience?"

My father was in the navy when I was a baby. He visited Pearl Harbor and brought back such wonderful stories, I felt the need to go myself. It was a touching afternoon.

Aloha, and Mahalo for visiting!

Cheryl In Peril! (Episode One)

While I was in Dallas, TX for a national writers' conference, I had the opportunity to visit a friend for a couple days. She took me and another mutual friend to the Ft. Worth Stockyards.

Amazing Animal!

As you can see, I took on the challenge to get up on this amazing creature, A Texas Longhorn. Just look at the size of those horns!

He was a nice, calm creature, but my goodness was he ever BIG!

Over the Saddle Back?

I didn't have much of a problem getting up onto him, but as you can see, getting down was a bit more difficult!

My friends--Lynne, who took the photos, and Kellie--decided I should do a blog post about my adventure. Together we came up with Cheryl In Peril!

I think I'll do a post every once in a while so you can laugh at me! It's always fun to laugh, huh? Enjoy!

Palms and Pineapples

If you've been keeping up with my blog, you may be aware that a couple weeks ago I posted about all the pineapples in my house. One of my readers sent me an e-mail and was surprised that I didn't have pineapple lights.

Of course I do! How could I forget??? Maybe it was because they were outside on my deck. It's actually strands of palm trees and pineapples--and I used them as part of the decorations at the release party.

Here they are, on my deck!

Up Close!

Palms and Pineapples lined up along my deck!

Another View of these delights!

Yaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!

In case you didn't know, that's Kimo yelling "Yaaaaaaay!!" while bopping around  and waving his arms in the air. Why is he so excited? Because the Book Release Party for Pineapples in Peril was a wonderful success on Saturday!

Here are just a sampling of some of the photos from the event. I'll have more on Thursday, with more details of all the fun times. But for now, check out all the kids making leis and bookmarks and having a great time!

See the pineapple cut-out cookies? I baked those ahead and froze them. On the Thursday before the event my son, Ian, and his girlfriend, Jasmine, came over and helped decorate them for most of the day. Ahhhh . . . family bonding for sure!

Enjoy the photos and come back on Thursday for more book release fun!
